At the 1957 Basel Fair, a small crowd formed around a modest stand. Word had spread that Piaget — until then a movement-maker to the trade, not a name most collectors could place — had built a mechanical calibre just two millimetres tall. Some of the watchmakers present said quietly that it could not be real; that at that height a movement could not be made to run reliably, let alone in production. They were wrong, and the calibre 9P went on to become the foundation of everything the maison would do for the next seventy years. What the sceptics could not see was that thinness, for Piaget, was never going to be a party trick. It was about to become a way of thinking.
The remarkable thing about Piaget is not that it did one difficult thing supremely well. It is that it did two — mastery of the ultra-thin movement, and mastery of the decorative, jewelled, hardstone-dialled watch — and held them together in a single house without either one diluting the other. Most manufactures are defined by a single obsession. Piaget was defined by a contradiction it refused to resolve, and the market, seventy years on, is only now catching up to how rare that is.
From a farm in La Côte-aux-Fées
The house began, as several of the great Swiss names did, in the Jura mountains, on a farm. In 1874, at nineteen, Georges-Édouard Piaget started producing handmade movements and components in a workshop on the family farm at La Côte-aux-Fées — a village high in the Neuchâtel hills, remote enough that isolation itself became part of the discipline. For its first decades the enterprise was a supplier: Piaget made movements, and other firms put their names on the dials. This is the quiet part of the story that matters most. Before Piaget was ever a luxury brand, it was an engineering house, and the engineering came first.
That order of priorities explains what came later. When Georges-Édouard’s descendants — his son Timothée, then the third generation, Gérald and Valentin — decided to pursue extreme thinness, they were not chasing a marketing line. They were doing what the house had always done, which was to solve a hard mechanical problem for its own sake. The difference was that by the mid-1950s they had decided to stop supplying the trade and put their own name on the result. The registration of the Piaget trademark in 1943 marked the shift; the 9P, fourteen years later, made it irreversible.
It is worth pausing on the geography, because Piaget’s split personality is literally built into two sites. Movements are made at La Côte-aux-Fées, in the mountains, where the firm began. Cases and jewellery work are done at Plan-les-Ouates, near Geneva. One site is engineering; the other is art. The company’s whole identity is the conversation between those two places — and its finest watches are the ones where neither side gives way.
The two-millimetre discipline
To understand why the 9P was a genuine shock rather than a novelty, it helps to know what two millimetres costs. Franck Touzeau, one of Piaget’s own watchmaking voices, has put it plainly: two millimetres remains the practical limit below which a hand-wound movement becomes very risky to run reliably over the long term, and Piaget reached it in 1957, without computers, with components sometimes as fine as a human hair. The calibre 9P was the thinnest mechanical hand-wound movement in the world.

Three years later came the more audacious act. In 1960 Piaget introduced the calibre 12P — an automatic movement just 2.3mm tall, made possible by an off-centre 24-carat gold micro-rotor that Valentin Piaget had patented in 1959. It was the thinnest automatic movement in the world, and it earned the maison a place in the Guinness records. The micro-rotor was the crucial idea: rather than a full-diameter winding weight sitting on top of the movement and adding height, a small, dense gold rotor was set into the plane of the movement itself. Thinness was not achieved by removing function. It was achieved by rethinking where function could live.
What Piaget did next is the part collectors most respect. It kept the 9P and 12P for itself. Where other movement houses would have sold such calibres across the industry, Piaget opened Salon Piaget in Geneva and began building its own precious-metal cases around its own movements — marrying, for the first time under one roof, the discipline of the movement and the freedom of the case. The thinner the movement, the more the case and dial were liberated from technical constraint. A 2mm calibre does not merely make a slim watch; it hands the designer a blank canvas. Everything expressive that Piaget did afterwards was made possible by that engineering restraint first. The Altiplano line that anchors the maison today descends in an unbroken line from the 9P — the modern 900P even takes its name from it — and Piaget has developed more than twenty-five ultra-thin calibres since, including the thinnest hand-wound tourbillon and, in the 1208P, a movement holding a double record for slimness.
The other mastery: stone, gold, and nerve
Here is where Piaget diverges from every other serious manufacture. Having earned the right to make the thinnest, most restrained watches in the world, it spent the 1960s and 1970s making some of the boldest.

As the quartz crisis gathered and much of the industry lost its nerve, Piaget did the opposite. It brought colour and audacity to the dial, carving faces from lapis lazuli, jade, turquoise, opal, tiger’s eye, malachite and onyx — hardstone dials that turned the watch into a piece of jewellery without surrendering the movement inside. It sculpted gold into cuffs and manchette bracelets, sometimes textured like nuggets of calcified coral, worn high on the wrist as ornament first and instrument second. Salvador Dalí was licensed to contribute designs in 1967. The results were, by any measure, watches that only a house completely sure of its engineering could afford to make so extravagant.
This is the duality that defines Piaget and almost nothing else in Swiss watchmaking. Patek and Vacheron pursued complication; Rolex pursued the tool watch; Cartier pursued shape. Piaget alone insisted on being, at once, the most technically restrained movement-maker and the most visually daring dial-maker. It is a difficult position to hold, because the two instincts pull against each other — and holding them is precisely the achievement.
The Piaget Society
For roughly two decades, Piaget was also the most glamorous house in watchmaking, and it is a period the maison is only now, in its recent Andy Warhol collaborations, willing to talk about openly. Under Yves Piaget, the fourth generation, the Geneva showroom operated less like a shop than a private club — a place where “Piaget Society” clients could commission bespoke creations to wear at St Moritz or the Hôtel Byblos. Jackie Kennedy wore a jade-dial Piaget. Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren wore the sculptural gold cuffs. Andy Warhol — who owned at least seven Piagets, four of which now sit in the maison’s own archives — moved in Yves Piaget’s circle and was photographed with him from Studio 54 to Washington galas. One dealer’s assessment of the era is worth repeating for how much it says: Piaget pieces were “more expensive and more exclusive than Patek Philippe.”

Then, in the mid-1980s, the family sold to what would become the Richemont group — the home of Cartier and Vacheron Constantin — and Piaget, for a long stretch afterward, was read primarily as a jeweller that also made watches. That framing did the horology a quiet disservice, and it is the reason the vintage market undervalued Piaget for years while it fully rerated its neighbours.
Where Piaget sits now
That is changing, and the signals are unambiguous. Piaget’s 1970s hardstone-dial and cuff watches are now recognised at the major houses as among the most iconic, recognisable and desirable objects of their era — “true works of art,” in the language auction specialists now use for them. At Watches and Wonders 2026 in Geneva, the maison’s headline releases were two new Andy Warhol editions with hardstone dials, a formal, licensed reclaiming of exactly the era it once kept quiet about. The house is, in effect, telling collectors to look again at its patrimony — and the collectors who moved early on vintage Piaget have been vindicated.

The collector Piaget attracts is a particular kind: someone who has already been round the obvious houses and is looking for the thing that is quietly better than its reputation. Vintage Piaget rewards knowledge. It does not shout its value across a room the way a steel sports watch does; it asks the wearer to understand what a two-millimetre movement or a hand-carved lapis dial actually represents. That is not a mass position. It is, however, exactly the kind of undervalued craft that ages into appreciation — and the current rerating suggests the wider market has finally started to agree.
